It bothers me that that there are too many people who pronounce the indefinite article “a” incorrectly. Among them is the pedantic host of Jeopardy, Alex Trebek, and many other broadcasters as well. There was a question about the three articles (a, an, and the) on Jeopardy the other day.
Lots of examples of such people may be found on television and radio, particularly on news programs. A large percentage of them also pronounce the “t” in “often.” Will they ever learn?
The indefinite article “a” is pronounced as a schwa (/ə/), like the “u” in “but” as opposed to “ay” as in “play.”
Examples: Get a life, take a hike.
If you are interested in pursuing this further, please feel free to do a (/ə/) search on the word “schwa” on the Web.
