Get a Life! Get it Right!

It bothers me when supposedly bright people have a poor understanding of language. Tonight, on 60 Minutes, Leslie Stahl referred to Taylor Swift’s love affairs as being short-lived. She failed to understand the meaning when she pronounced the “live” syllable with the short “i” as in the verb “to live.”

The word “short-lived“ (pronounced shawrt-lahyvd) is an adjective that describes something that lasts a short time. It refers to having a short life or existence as opposed to living a short time.
