Dov is a Bear, not a Dove

“Dov” means “bear” in Hebrew. There are many people (probably male and Jewish) with that first name. There also are many people who pronounce it incorrectly. That’s because the same letter combinations in English are not always pronounced the same way. The “ov” combination in English is pronounced at least four different ways (i.e., improv, move, above, and woven).

bear       dove

The correct pronunciation of the Hebrew name, Dov, is with a long “o” as in “he dove into the water” rather than the short “o” as in “dove,” the bird of peace.
