What is “Past History”?

Is there any other kind?

I’ve heard of terms such as ancient history and recent history to describe how long ago things happened. But why does plain old history need past as a modifier? Isn’t all of history in the past?

The field of medicine has attempted to dignify the use of past with a term called PMH (Past Medical History). Here are some sample forms that doctors use:

pmh-2 pmh-form

For those who wish to avoid having to create their own forms, computer users may download templates of these forms from the Internet.

I don’t get it!
