What Do Words Really Mean?

Many, many years ago I heard this lengthy quote from Alan Greenspan. I took great pride in being able to recite it from memory.

In this climate of verbal ambiguities and double negatives, it seems more appropriate today than it was when first spoken.

“I know you think you understand what you thought I said but I’m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant”
